Here in Austin, racing season is in the winter, so half marathon and marathon training is just starting. It’s still hard for me to adjust to the heat – highs have still been consistently in the 90s – but I’m really looking forward to even slightly cooler weather so that I can start running more!
I registered for the Austin Marathon which is on February 18. That still seems very far away, but I’ve to start working on base-building now because my 16-week training will begin on October 30. Leading up to the marathon, I have a few races to help me test out my fitness along the way and practice race-day routines. Here’s what’s coming up for me:
PPTC Turkey Trot – November 23
I’ll be in NYC for Thanksgiving so I’ll get to run the PPTC Turkey Trot in Prospect Park! It’s a 5-miler run by my old running club (Prospect Park Track Club) and I volunteered the past few years that I lived in NYC so I haven’t run it in a while. I’m not sure whether I’ll race it or just use it as a fun way to get in miles before the Thanksgiving feast, but I’m looking forward to seeing all my old teammates and running through Prospect Park again.
Rock n’ Roll San Antonio Half – December 3
I registered for this one before I even signed up for the marathon because Rock n’ Roll races are so much fun! San Antonio is about a two hour drive from Austin, so I’m using the race as an excuse to do some touristy things like visit The Alamo, and get to see another city in Texas. My friend Nicole is also running the race so I’ll have a travel buddy too! This race will be timed well for testing my fitness and really assessing my marathon goal time.
3M Half Marathon – January 21
This half marathon is sponsored by 3M and allegedly has the best swag. It’s also one of Austin’s most popular races because although it is hilly (like all races in Austin, it’s impossible to plot a flat course!) it’s net-downhill, making it a great PR course. I was worried it would be too close to the marathon to really race, since it’s only 4 weeks before, but almost everyone I know is planning on doing both races. My friend Hilary is coming down from NYC to race it too!
Austin Marathon – February 18
These are all of course leading up to the marathon, on President’s Day Weekend! It’s a notoriously hilly course and the weather can be very fickle (pouring rain, or 95% humidity, were the past two years) so I don’t know if it will be a PR attempt but I am excited to run my new-hometown marathon!

In the meantime, I’ll be building up my mileage in preparation for a timed 5K on October 19th organized by the Austin Runners Club. It’s designed specifically to test your fitness before marathon training starts, to gauge where you are and what a realistic time goal might be!
In the next month, I’ll also try to take some fun workout classes that I might not be able to fit in to my schedule once I’m marathon training…like stand-up paddleboarding yoga!
